This September I had the chance to visit Milan.
This city surprised me a lot to be honest. Very modern, but full of old buildings. Huge city full of green. It seems nice to live in Milan.
I didn't know how to start the article so I put a pic of what we have down the road. I think it explains how is it here... Ok :p
So, new school year, new place, new stuff. I got the chance to go in sport university in Messina and Gloria to do her last here in here to.
We did come here in early September (they got up to 50°C in august here, i wouldn't have survive).
I already visited my new and future academies, which are part of my university. Very well !
The BJJ academy is a part of Tribe Jiu Jitsu, well known and quiet big here in Italy, didn't get the chance to take any pics yet, but i certified that the technical level is very good. Even if the body shape is quiet different than Ireland or France here (i'm one of the biggest :( ), i'll get the chance to learn a lot for my BJJ and completely different of what i'm used to. That will be all good ! Glad about that !
I also have the chance that the neighbors are part of this very same academy and own a mat they display on our buildings roof to train.
On the judo side, I have the very chance and honor to have a twice olympian (in judo and freestyle wrestling) prof. Katarzyna Juszczak who provides excellent trainings !
I have the intention to compete both in Judo and BJJ this year, if my time and money is okay -student lol-, and i'm sure all those trainings would be very good for me, for my improvement and all the rest.
I can't wait to go back to training again !
Dear BJJ globetrotters,
this summer brought me back to my homeland and my family, but of course I also kept training BJJ!
I had the chance this time to know better my amazing neighbors who initiated me to BJJ almost 3 years ago. I traveled around Sicily with them, following Marco in his photo-shooting walks for Panasonic and also trained at the most absurd hours with Dario on his Roof-tatami with the amazing view of the Messina Strait and the moonlight.
I couldn't be more curious to meet their teammates at their site in Giardini Naxos, the only Globetrotter academy in Sicily so far.
Tribe Jiu Jitsu can be found all over Italy, awarding this year the first place as a team in the national competition. In Sicily the team is headed by professor Rodelli in Catania, followed by Messina City Center and Giardini Naxos, which are both leaded by coach Salvo Romeo.
The academy we trained is located in a very beautiful spot, close to the seaside and in a multi functional center:
Centro Didattico Mediterraneo
Via Vittorio Emanuele
206 98035 Giardini Naxos – ME
BJJ: tuesday and thursday 5pm to 6.30pm
I introduced myself to the group and I already felt how much these guys are happy together. The atmosphere was amazing and everybody was friendly, smiley and helpful.
We started training with coach Salvo Romeo, purple belt and head of the TRIBE JIU JITSU Messina & Giardini Naxos and, at the end, the newly promoted professor Rodelli arrived and joined us for the sparring.
I also participated to the whipping for the new belts received! The mat is colored of many deserved blue belts now!
I can confirm the level of the guys there, most of them are competitors who did very well at the last Italian competitions!
The sparring was great and we were all with the smile on our faces, no ego, rolling fast, but safe and just enjoying it and having fun!
There was no space for bragging, no space for patronizers, there was just Jiu Jitsu.
I loved it and I can just hope the best for these guys and recommend their academy for your list of Sicilian BJJ training, you won't regret it!
Of course for you guys of the TRIBE team, we can't wait to see you competing in Ireland too and visiting us in Dublin!
Thank you again to each one of you, to professor Rodelli and coach Salvo Romeo for the class, sparring, laughs and details!
First city with a couch to a BJJ Globetrotters guy !
A very great pleasure to meet him, friendly guy, spent his days with me, being my guide for the town and teams!
I arrived in Bologna around noon and saw a bearded man, Harry.
After 10 min we went to a BJJ training ! (very quiclky)
With the professor and competitor Ramon.
Actually i did 2 trainings there.
He taught us a lot of techniques like the Peruvian Necktie.
His style is very explosive, and smart. He explain to us a lot of things how to have an opportunity with every things. How to block someone with your own hips.
I'm happy about this trip, because in each academy you learn a different thing, even if you already know the technique, there's always a variation or loads of different details.
Ramon taught me to be opportunist during a fight, 'cos every move of your opponent could be used against him.'
Thanks for these trainings :)
Cirenaica grappling club
We started with a soft and static warmup, yoga style. We worked a lot to stretch our spines, it looked rubbish at first if you're not open minded (but i am so i was very intrigued), finally it was totally tiring, i was sweating a lot. To do it you need a lot of resistance, balance and flexibility !
After 30 min of this warm up, we had a small time, 15 min, about the baseball choke, just to made it better.
The black belt judo gave us the lesson.
Finally we started the real training, with another warmup, run and classic warmup.
We had a lesson about triangle, how to made triangle/armbar/americana when your partner is on all fours or on his belly and defend is collar.
Very judo style, but i learn an important thing : How to break a solid defense on the belly to have a triangle.
I always have difficulties with guys who do that, especially judokas. As you probably know, judokas are strong and have a strong defense. In competitions, when you do your throw on a rubbish way and you need to continue in newaza, this defense could happen very easily.
After we sparred and finished with some sprints (gosh, man, that was sadic to put that in the end xD)
But thanks for this very interesting training !
Next step : Verona
Quick review of Verona because i wasn't there for long !
But i visited and train at least !
Beautiful city with a lot of things to see !
The city is full of history, i won't explain all there, first cause i don't remember everything and second because i'm lazy ! haha
But i saw nice churches, bridges ..
i was surprised to be honest cause i didn't thought about that :
I was in Verona, so i saw the "Casa di Giulietta" from Romeo & Juliet
A lot of people as you can imagine. You can find a statue of Juliet and a porch with a lot of love words wrote by tourists !
I trained at FRATELLI LETERI
It was an open mat during the holidays, so we were just 4.
But it's always a pleasure to meet people and roll, I learnt things like always !
I love to roll with new people, you learn so much, it's always different !
So thanks to these guys ! :D
Next step : Innsbruck
6th of July I arrived in Torino
Grenoble - Torino 60€ for the tolls ... Aoutch, my wallet cried !
So i arrived in Torino and met my host, Alessandro. After 1 hour to prepare my stuff i decided to go to train. First academy :
i came in, seen a nice mat with on its students.
I met two BJJ black belts, Giseppe, the professor, and Leonardo.
These guys and all of their students were very friendly !
We had a lesson about a deep half guard. Actually it was really interesting for me, because i didn't learn it so much on my own academy.
The principle of the deep half guard is not so complicated .. Have de half guard, go deeper and closer to your opponent.
You need to be focused on mobility, secure of your external arm and be very close to the guy.
I already tried this technique, honestly i have some difficulties, but i will train on that :)
After we had some sparring that was soooooo tiring for me, the dudes were very tough haha !
And Guiseppe told me i've "very good bases", that's always a pleasure when you have compliments, especially when you feel tired and weak haha xD
It was an amazing time : train with them. I'm a bit sad because i wasn't able to train more with them..
I'll be back !
Second day in Turin
10h , after a woke up early (6.30 AM) i needed a coffe, let's go around the next academy
_ I went to the academy, under a church !! That was amazing, 'cos outside was so hot...
I saw Alessandro, the headcoach of the academy, who greeded me, said welcome and all...
He invited me to start to train with a bit of workout... Why not !
Huge crossfit room, nice stuff, a lot of kettlebells, very nice place. I did some streching, workout excercices, not too much because of the future trainings of the day :D
BJJ at 1PM :
Classical warmup and throw techniques, Old school judo techniques for BJJ, that was nice actually !
The guys were full of energy, strongs and fast !
Good training, simple techniques (i never saw it before by the way) and totally efficient.
To be honest, i didn't have a lot of energy, i felt bad during the training, i didn't sleep, drank , and ate enough during the previous days... So sometimes i was on the side, to focus on the techniques.
Nice training, not a lot of people but very nice :)
The rest of the afternoon was simple, had a nap, spoke with people from the academy... but i spent my time on this nice place !
Evening training : Professional Judo.
High Judo level !
Ok not my level at all, far far highest !
Quite interesting :
Static warm up : few way of sheathing, push-ups, and different articular warm-ups. We work our balance in the same time, with, for example, one foot - one hand sheathing.
After this warm up, few uchi komis (always in movement, never static) with a reaction of the partner. No news techniques, these guys don't need to.
Before the standing radoris, ne waza ! (obviously i was happy :D)
5 min, looking for the submission, when a submission is done, change immediately your partner, during 5 min.
And finally randoris !
So hard, the judokas there, as i already said, are on a high level. I didn't do every randoris, there was very tiring, but quiet interesting, i discovered some things, the guys were very patient, taught me some things about kumikata and positioning.
Finally, as my professor told us always, Judo is a huge family !
I'm very very happy to spent my day there, that was amazing.
Man, many thanks to the Torino academia for all !
Hope to see you soon :)
Finally, Torino was an interesting city with also amazing academies.
Even if i didn't visit so much the city, i loved to be there.
I will definitly come back when i can and i hope with my girlfriend. She needs to meet them.
Next step : Bologna
We do like to travel and train. After a trip around Europe, we couldn't stop doing it. Unfortunately, time is not always there. We try to update this globetrotting blog as much as we can !
